Have you ever wondered how local government works or what each department does and how it relates to the community? Here’s your chance to get involved, learn, and gain insight into the inner workings of your community at the city level through Sedro-Woolley Academy. We look forward to hearing from you or if you know of some one that would really enjoy this opportunity – please share. It’s free to any community member, but you must be 18 years or older.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The City of Sedro-Woolley is pleased to introduce the Sedro-Woolley Academy, an academy where residents can learn more about government structure and City operations from elected officials and City staff.

The Sedro-Woolley Academy will further inform participants on the functions of their local government, create more engaged members of the community, and share the message of public service.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

The program will begin on February 9, 2023 and consist of 8 weekly, one and a half hour-sessions on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Class size will be limited to 15 participants.  Classes will be in person with the potential for some remote accommodation, as needed.  The application deadline is Tuesday, January 24th Wednesday, February 8th at 4:30 PM.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Sedro-Woolley Academy is open to City of Sedro-Woolley and Skagit County residents. Participants must be over 18 years of age.  There is no cost to participate but participants must be able to attend all 8 sessions, as scheduled.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Each session will focus on a different area of local government. The sessions will be facilitated by City staff and include diverse content, engaging discussion, and opportunities for follow-up as needed.

  • Week 1, February 9 – Introduction and Government Structure Overview
  • Week 2, February 16 – Mayor, City Council, City Administrator, City Attorney
  • Week 3, February 23 – Finance/City Clerk, Information Technology
  • Week 4, March 2 – Police Department
  • Week 5, March 9 – Fire Department
  • Week 6, March 16 – Planning & Community Development Department
  • Week 7, March 23 – Public Works Department
  • Week 8, March 30 – Graduation
